Darker pigmentation in gums can be caused by several different factors. The most common cause is genetics. Other causes include smoking, side effects from certain medications, and, occasionally, amalgam fillings. Darkly colored gums do not indicate any type of disease or dysfunction.

Gingival depigmentation, also known as gum depigmentation or gum bleaching, can be performed with either a scalpel or a laser, and is a primarily cosmetic procedure used to remove darker (brown or black) gum tissue. Our dentist performs this procedure using a laser, as laser gum treatments result in less bleeding, reduce pain, and increase your healing time. Using the laser, our dentist will carefully and gently remove the excess gum tissue, lightening the color of your gums to help you achieve a healthier smile. You will be given a local anesthetic prior to your treatment to ensure your comfort during the procedure.

Your procedure will take about 20-45 minutes, depending on the color of your gums and the size of the dark patch. A single gum stripping treatment can last anywhere from 20 years to a lifetime.
