The holiday season is here, and that makes it more important than ever to keep your mouth clean. Nobody wants to add treating a cavity to their holiday to-do list! Here are some great tips to help make sure that doesn’t happen.

First of all, brush your teeth. This should happen twice a day, for 2 minutes each time. That’s less time than many of your favorite holiday songs. So turn on a tune, and brush away! If you struggle to take that much time, try setting a timer. Some electric toothbrushes even come with timers built-in, to ensure a quality clean.

Also, floss your teeth! Every day! Flossing properly removes the food particles and plaque that your toothbrush cannot reach. Flossing should take 2-3 minutes each day. Use only ADA-approved products that are specifically intended for cleaning between teeth.

Watch the foods you intake–sugary and acidic foods both do damage to your teeth. This goes beyond candy; many drinks, particularly, are full of both acids and sugars. Acidic and sugary drinks include soda, energy drinks, sports drinks, fruit juice, wine, and most coffee beverages. The acids and sugars in these drinks and other foods contribute to tooth enamel decay and cavities.
